Babies experience incredible growth in their first year. Within 12 months, you will watch your little one develop tremendously in both their physical and mental states. They learn to roll over, sit up, crawl, sit up, and some even try to stand. Watching them grow is undoubtedly one of the sweetest parts of becoming a parent.
At the same time, your baby’s sleep pattern also changes. As they grow older, they would sleep less in the daytime and become awake longer between naps. When babies are first born, they sleep a lot and up until 16 to 17 hours a day. However, during this period, they also wake up every 1 to 2 hours -- which means you do too. By 8 months, babies usually will need 2 naps in the morning and afternoon. Each nap usually lasts for 1 to 2 hours. You can monitor your child’s sleep schedule better during this stage. There is a misconception that baby needs only 1 nap when they are 12 months old. However, most babies are not prepared for the transition to one nap per day until they are at least 15 months old.
As babies grow, their body develops as well which will affect their sleep pattern. Another common sleep regression happens around 8 to 9 months of age. This is mainly due to the physical developments of babies such as them starting to crawl or even walk. This development can interfere with their sleep as well.
When something interesting is happening or the environment is too bright and full of noise, babies tend to keep themselves awake. Other than that, they might experience separation anxiety as well. If you have always accompanied your little one previously, they may end up not wanting to go to sleep if you are not around. They might also wake up more often at night.
